RILEY, CLEVEN-1CLEVEN RILEY was born on June 15, 1922 in Scott, Mississippi. He was one of eight children born to parents, Fannie and George Riley. He spent his childhood in Mississippi, where he also received his formal education. When he became of age, Cleven enlisted into the military, where he served his country during World War II. After completing his military assignment, he moved to San Diego, California in 1947, making it his permanent residence. Shortly afterwards, he began his employment at North Island Air Station, where he was employed as a painter for thirty-five years. While at North Island, Cleven made numerous friendships before retiring during the mid- 1980s. After retirement, Cleven began a successful landscaping business, which he operated for several years. Cleven was a very proud member of the 69th Street Church of Christ. The congregation loved him as much as he loved them and they quickly became his family. Cleven was a very loving and caring father, grandfather and a friend to many. His grandson, Alonzo and grandchildren, whom he also raised, affectionately called him “PoePoe”. One of his favorite pastimes was gardening and landscaping. His lawn always looked impeccable. He also enjoyed playing dominoes with his friends. Cleven was known for having a heart of gold, a giving nature and always helping others. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha; sons, Cleveland and Milton; stepson, Charles; parents, Fannie and George Riley; his sisters, Lillie Mae and Annie Mae and his brothers, George, Alex, Roosevelt and OB. On Tuesday, March 5, 2016, Cleven Riley, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the blessed age of ninety-three. He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Robert Lee (Joyce), daughter, Christine Riley-Cook; stepson, Tommy Gladney (Marie); stepdaughter, Claudette Gladney-Leday (Michael); his brother, John Henry; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. Graveside Services were held Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at La Vista Memorial Park. Final arrangements were entrusted to Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary.
