The 68th Annual Salute to the Champions’ dinner was held last Thursday night at the San Diego Town and Country Resort & Convention Center to celebrate and honor athletes with San Diego ties. Ricky Johnson (motocross), Teri McKeever (swimming), Chris Marlowe (volleyball), and Damon Allen (football), were this year’s inductees into the Bob Breitbard San Diego Hall of Champions.

Several community activists were recognized for their hard work. Among them was former NFL player, John Brockington, who was awarded with the prestigious Ernest H. Wright Humanitarian Award for his diligent efforts in kidney research through his foundation.

Former San Diego Padre announcer Jerry Coleman received the lifetime achievement award posthumously for his outstanding broadcasting career which spanned 41 years all with the Padres.

Challenged athlete Eric McElvanny and community leader Ben Press were also recognized for their tireless work and achievements.

The Eastlake Little League team was also honored for their outstanding season ending with an appearance in last year’s Little League World Series Championship Game.

“Tonight was one of the best experiences of my life. This was real cool to get support from the people here, and meeting all the athletes was really nice,” said Eastlake baller Michael Gaines.

SDSU triple jump champ, Shanieka Thomas, got her well-deserved plaque for her superior performances in collegiate track & field.

“This award means a lot to me because it’s recognition for all the hard work that I’ve been putting in. I really appreciate it. I would also like to thank my coach Sheila Burrell for being such a nice person and a great coach,” said Thomas.

Lincoln High School legend Damon Allen was inducted for his 14 years as a record setting professional quarterback in the Canadian football league. City officials also gave Damon a very special honor, proclaiming February 13, 2014 Damon Allen Day.

“A hall of fame induction recognizes your successes and your entire body of work, the struggles and all the hard work it took to make a night like this possible. Tonight’s awards also means family; without my family support I would have never made it this far. I have to also thank all my friends and San Diego for their life long support,” said Allen.
