jacksonJOY CHESTER JACKSON was born on January 2, 1927 in Winkler County, Texas to Eddie and Jannie Jackson. His father preceded him in death in 1941. The Jackson Family later moved to Dallas (Oak Cliff), Texas where he accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. He attended NW Harlee and BF Darell Lincoln High School. On October 2, 1945, Joy enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. He received his Honorable Discharge after twenty years of service.  Afterwards, he began working at North Island. He retired as an aircraft painter in 1999 after thirty-five years of exemplary service. Joy, who had an incredible thirst for knowledge, enrolled at San Diego City College while working at North Island. In 1977, he received as Associate’s Degree in Business Administration. Joy met and married the love of his life Lola Mae Baron in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1958. Shortly afterwards, they relocated to San Diego, California, complimentary from the United States Navy. Their union was beautifully blessed with six children. In 1999, Joy joined Greater Fellowship Baptist Church under the spiritual guidance of the late Reverend Luther E. Thompson and continued under Reverend Ronald L. Edwards, Sr. and served on the Deacon Board. During the late 2000’s, Joy was recognized as “Veteran of the Year” in San Diego County. He worked very hard to provide a good living for his family. He loved and enjoyed driving his old Ford truck, working in the yard, barbecuing, cooking and taking pictures of his family. But most of all, he enjoyed spending quality time with his family and dear friends. He adored his mother and she knew it. He was a very humble man with a huge sense of humor. Although he was very frugal, he had a very giving nature to anyone in need. Whenever someone asked him for a financial favor and after reaching in his pocket, he would tell them “it will cost you $2”; followed with a large chuckle and a huge smile. He will be greatly remember for being a father to the fatherless and providing words of wisdom and encouragement to all ages.  He will be greatly missed. In 2013, Joy’s health was challenged with failing kidneys. Throughout his illness, he demonstrated tremendous strength, always providing words of encouragement to his beloved family. For he knew “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Joy fought a good fight, finished his race and he kept the faith. He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Antonio Jackson and his father, Eddie Jackson. On Saturday, November 19, 2016, Joy Chester Jackson was called from earthly labor to eternal rest. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of fifty-nine years, Lola Mae Jackson: his loving children; Joy Russell, Debra Rosetta, Deidre Gaye, Donna Jeannine, Dena Alaine and Dewii Ann Jackson: his beloved mother, Jannie Broden: his sister, Jewelline Clark; cousin, Patricia Jackson Franklin and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

Services were held Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary “Memory Chapel”; interment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
