Lera M. Johnson was born August 1, 1945 to the union of Setlers Brown Sr. and Emma Louise Brown (both deceased). Lera made her transition from this time side of life on May 2, 2017.  Her sisters: Jackie Brown and Lorraine D. Taylor, brother Joe Brown and grandmother, Wilbie Booker preceded her in death.

Lera worked with the San Diego Unified School District for many years, strengthening parent participation policies that would help Elementary students and their parents gain access to much needed resources. She also shared responsibility for building successful partnerships in many school reform efforts.
