Nellie Gary departed this early life to be with the Lord on April 25, 2017. She was born July 11, 1927 in Akron, Ohio. She was one of six children born to the late James and Quita Herbert. She received her education in Akron, where she also accepted Christ as her personal Savior at a very young age.

During the early years, Nellie united in Holy Matrimony with Roy W. Gary. She later became a charter member of the Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, founded by her husband who served as pastor. She also served in many capacities including, President of the Women’s Department and Sunday School Secretary. She was also the organist for the church for many years.

Nellie was employed with Lakeshore Jewelers. She retired in 1992, after twenty years of exemplary service.

After retirement, Nellie was able to spend more time and enjoyed working in her garden, planting beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed interior decorating. In 2000, Nellie’s beloved husband of fifty-one years passed away. Shortly afterwards, she moved to San Diego, California to be closer to her family. She joined the New Creation Church in 2010, where her son, Reginald L. Gary served as pastor. Her favorite hymn was “Blessed Assurance” and reading her bible always brought great comfort to her. Nellie loved the Lord dearly and she knew He loved her.

Nellie was a God fearing woman and a very loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and a friend to many. Although she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, she will remain in the hearts of loved ones forever; for Nellie has pressed on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus, Philippians 3:14.

Nellie was preceded in death by her husband; her granddaughter, April Satterwhite; both of her parents and her brother, James Herbert. .

She leaves to rejoice her homegoing: her daughter, Gail Bush (Al) of Florida; sons, Reverend Reginald Lee Gary (Karen), Jeffrey Gary (Angie) and Mark Gary (Annette) all of San Diego, CA; four sisters, Ada Lee Anderson of Los Angeles, CA, Pearl Thompson and Meri Ann Gillespie both of Cleveland, OH and Thelma Porter of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Sharice Martin (Michael), Robin Satterwhite. Robert Satterwhite II, Desiree Satterwhite, Martina Sanders (Michael), Marquis Gary (Shamika), Marshall Gary (Dominique), A’ntoinette Gary, Marcus Gary and Jennifer Gary; seventeen great-grandchildren; two godsons, Nathan Mitchell of Nashville, TN and Reggie Lockhart of Akron, OH; goddaughter, Sherlon Harris of Akron, OH; special friend, Rowena Coker of Copley, OH and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services were held Thursday, May 4, 2017 at New Creation Church, San  Diego, California; final resting place at Rose Hill Cemetery Mausoleum ,Akron, Ohio. Final arrangements were entrusted to Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary.
