Last Saturday was proclaimed “Meb Keflezighi Day”as he received the key to America’s Finest City from Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

Close to three hundred fans, family, friends and media gathered at Balboa stadium to honor the San Diego native and 2014 Boston Marathon winner.

During the festive event, Meb walked around the track with his family and fans to bring awareness to fitness, training, education and nutrition.

Autograph seeking fans were not disappointed as Meb signed every shirt, hat, magazine, picture and even exposed skin that was put in front of him with the patience of a the Pope.

“Meb is a genuinely nice guy,” shared SDSU Track & Field Coach, Sheila Burrell. “He’s always been that way going back to when we were college teammates together at UCLA. He’s a down to earth guy, what you see is definitely what you get. He is not a flashy guy, he is a very humble person.” The last three weeks, Meb has been very busy, but Burrell said “He still finds time to talk to the kids. He really enjoys people and he definitely deserves all of his success.”

Meb Keflezighi became the first American to win the prestigious Boston Marathon in 30 years. The San Diego Hall of Champions was quick to put together this special occasion of recognition for Meb - San Diego’s special champion.

“Without a doubt winning the Boston Marathon has to be my biggest achievement so far. Of my career, it was an amazing victory not just for me but for my country and family,” Meb shared.

He is no stranger to victories. His resume is full of outstanding accomplishments starting with his San Diego CIF championships that led to state championships in both distance races representing SDHS.
