On Tuesday, the Balch Springs Police Department chief announced that he had fired the police officer who shot into a moving vehicle and killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards.

The name of the officer has been released as well: Roy Oliver. Chief Jonathan Haber said that the decision to fire Oliver was made after reviewing the body cam footage from Oliver and one other officer on the scene as after an internal investigation had been completed.

“You have my assurances that my department will continue to be responsive, transparent and accountable,” Chief Haber said.

In addition to the completed internal investigation, the sheriff’s department and the district attorney’s office are now conducting a criminal investigation into the matter.

Oliver and the other police who arrived on the scene were responding to reports that a party last weekend was getting out of hand and had arrived to look into reports of underage drinking. Edwards and the others in the car that he was traveling in were trying to leave the party when Oliver fired into the moving vehicle.

Originally, Oliver had claimed that the vehicle was moving backwards toward him in an “aggressive manner,” but the police department later corrected that account after an investigation was completed and noted that the car was actually moving away from Oliver when he fired into it.
