SAN DIEGO  — On Thursday, Jan. 8, Cara & Garland, APLC hosted its first-ever complimentary annual labor and employment law workshop, “Points and Authorities: New 2015 Labor and Employment Laws” at The Bristol Hotel. This year’s event brought together 32 attendees, including local and regional employers, human resources professionals and attorneys to understand the new legal landscape to take effect in 2015.

“Attendees appeared to be most concerned about the implementation of the new paid sick leave mandate,” said Cara &Garland Founder Adriana Cara. “This was understandable, given the fact that all employers are covered by its provisions, regardless of size.”

Key discussion points included the new law on mandatory paid sick leave, changes to the Labor Code that require employers to provide additional paid breaks to employees, and amendments to the Fair Employment and Housing Act.

“Another area of significant interest to the attendees was  the cross section of new immigration and employment laws, particularly the laws that expand FEHA protection to undocumented workers,” said Cara & Garland Founder Meagan Garland. “Until case law further defines the new legislation, employers find themselves between the proverbial ‘rock and a hard place’ in balancing the applicable immigration law requirements with employment rights now afforded to undocumented workers.”

The inaugural workshop was, by all accounts, a success and was met with a warm reception from community members and local business owners. Cara & Garland’s Points and Authorities breakfast briefings will be an annual event in an effort to provide awareness to local employers regarding the latest employment laws and their implications.
