On Saturday, June 7, 2025, Metro Community Ministries, Inc. (MCMI) held its first-ever Dominoes Tournament at the Marina Village Conference Center, bringing together community members for an afternoon of strategy, laughter, and purpose.
The event, which ran from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., wasn’t just about games and bragging rights, it was a gathering focused on unity and support for individuals re-entering society after incarceration. With food, music, and lively competition, the tournament served as a creative and welcoming way to raise awareness around MCMI’s mission.
Linda Womack, CEO of Metro Community Ministries, said the idea for the event came from Executive Board Member, Judi Patterson.
“Today’s effort manifests a vision of Executive Board member Judi Patterson’s communion amongst the community… fun, food, and fellowship,” Womack said. “In light of the uncertainty of funding support for community initiatives, this effort raises awareness and solidarity of support for justice-involved individuals, strengthening efforts of re-entry and rebuilding lives.”
Patterson, whose work focuses on re-entry and mental health, has been a long-time advocate of creating safe spaces where people feel valued and supported. The tournament offered just that, pairing social connection with a sense of purpose.
“This event brings it all down to a place of comfort,” Womack added, “as we engage our competitive skill and crown a 2025 Domino’s Champion!”
That champion was Charles Claybrooks, who outplayed the field to take home top honors in the spirited final match. With his win came applause, a trophy, and plenty of friendly teasing from fellow players.
By the end of the day, champions were named, new friendships were formed, and the energy in the room reflected a shared commitment to second chances. MCMI hopes to make this an annual tradition, using games and gathering as tools for healing and progress.
Watching strangers become teammates and laughter fill the space, You couldn’t help but wonder: If a few games and a shared table can do this much, what else is possible when a community shows up with intention and heart?
