1881 – Blanche Kelso Bruce Becomes Register of the Treasury

On this day in 1881, Blanche Kelso Bruce was sworn in as Register of the Treasury under the Garfield administration. He maintained government accounting records and had his signature placed on all U.S. currency. He held this position until 1885. Prior to this appointment, he was the first African American Senator to serve a full term, representing Mississippi from 1875 to 1881.
