San Diego Voice & Viewpoint is committed to accurate, fair, independent and accountable journalism rooted in San Diego’s African-American community. We verify our reporting, identify the source and nature of content, separate news from opinion and advertising, and correct material errors openly.

This policy applies to editorial content published in print, online, in newsletters, on social media and in other San Diego Voice & Viewpoint formats. It applies to staff, contractors, fellows, freelancers and contributors.

Accuracy, Fairness and Transparency

Verification and context

We verify names, dates, quotations, statistics and other material facts before publication, using original records and firsthand sources whenever practical. Headlines, captions, images and social posts must accurately reflect the reporting. We do not present rumor, advocacy or speculation as fact.

When reporting significant criticism or allegations, we make a good-faith effort to seek a response before publication and include relevant context. Deadline pressure does not excuse inaccuracy.

Sources and attribution

We identify and attribute sources so readers can evaluate the information. Anonymous sources require editor approval, a clear public-interest reason and corroboration whenever possible. Submitted, syndicated, partner and press-release material is labeled and is not presented as original staff reporting. We do not plagiarize.

Independence and labeling

News, opinion, advertising and sponsored content are clearly distinguished. Advertisers, donors, grantmakers and partners do not control coverage or newsroom conclusions. Relevant financial or personal conflicts are disclosed, and journalists may be reassigned or recused. We do not accept payment, gifts or favors intended to influence coverage.

Dignity, privacy and visual accuracy

We weigh public value against foreseeable harm, especially when covering children, trauma, private individuals and sensitive personal information. We avoid irrelevant stereotypes or personal characteristics. Images, audio, video and data must not be altered or presented in a materially misleading way; generated or materially altered visuals are clearly labeled.

Corrections and Updates

When we confirm a material factual error, we correct it promptly and clearly. Online corrections identify the error and accurate information in a dated note; serious errors may require a prominent editor’s note. Material print errors are corrected in the next practicable edition. We also correct related newsletters, social posts, audio or video when possible.

A clarification explains reporting that was accurate but unclear. An update adds significant new information. Minor spelling, punctuation, formatting or broken-link fixes that do not change meaning may be made without a note. Retractions or removals are reserved for exceptional legal, safety, privacy or fundamental accuracy concerns. We do not remove accurate reporting merely because it is disputed or unwelcome.

Request a Correction

Use our Contact Us form at https://sdvoice.info/contact-us/ and begin the message with “Correction Request,” or call (619) 266-2233. Identify the article, explain the possible error and provide supporting information when available. The Managing Editor or a designated editor will review the request; urgent errors involving safety, identity, elections, health or serious allegations receive priority.

The Managing Editor oversees this policy, with final editorial authority resting with the Publisher. We review the policy at least annually.
