Celebrating African Cuisine, Music, Film & Culture
Friday, October 18 through Sunday, October 27th
For the second year in a row, African Restaurant Week will showcase a variety of African restaurants and promote African businesses and culture in San Diego. In an effort to highlight El Cajon Boulevard’s ethnic business clusters, the El Cajon Boulevard BIA partnered with the Horn of Africa, International Rescue Committee in San Diego, the City Heights CDC, the Media Arts Center, and the World Beat Center to shed a positive light on San Diego’s recently settled African community.
A business district is a reflection of the local community, and African Restaurant Week is a great opportunity to celebrate the food, music, culture, and film from this region of the world, which now has a growing presence in the San Diego’s diverse neighborhoods.
To kick-off African Restaurant Week, the Media Arts Center is hosting an extraordinary opening night event, which will commence with a tradition African drum call, and a ‘Taste of African Cuisine’ with a sampling for food from each participating restaurant. Live African music and dance will carry on throughout the night along with a film screening of La Pirogue at 10pm. This is a party that you don’t want to miss!
Fun will ensue throughout the week with opportunities to experience and learn about African culture. Free cooking classes are scheduled on week nights, as well as African dance and music on the weekends. A new element of this year’s event includes an African Film Series, with various films playing throughout African Restaurant Week at Media Arts Center San Diego. The four participating restaurants are Awash Ethiopian Restaurant, Flavors of East Africa, Awash Ethiopian Market and Restaurant, and Fatuma’s Restaurant, as well as RED Sambusas and Catering, which serves up East African Cuisine at various local farmers markets.
