The spirit of giving was on full display as It Takes a Village Community Organization hosted its 2026 Spring Backpack Drive in San Diego at John F Kennedy Neighborhood Park, providing essential items to families in need. The event offered free backpacks, hygiene supplies, and snacks, creating both relief and joy for dozens of children in the community.

Led by CEO Malika Hollins, the organization focuses on meeting both practical and seasonal needs for local youth. Hollins explained the timing behind the initiative, emphasizing its impact. “The organization gave out about 80 backpacks and the reason for doing the backpack drive at this time of year is a great way for kids to come back from spring break with a new backpack to end the year and also get them through the summer,” she said.

President Porsche Wingate echoed that sentiment, highlighting the emotional impact of the day. “I am happy that we were able to reach the community today and spread the love, it was great seeing a lot of kids leave better than they came,” she shared.

Families gathered, children smiled, and volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure each child received support. Looking ahead, the organization plans to host the event again in spring 2027, aiming to create another avenue of effective change and expand its impact within the community.

As local needs continue to grow, how can more organizations step up to make a lasting difference?
