Assemblymember Dr. LaShae Sharp-Collins, her volunteer team, and several community partners took over Bell Middle School on December 20 for the 79th District Holiday Giveaway, drawing hundreds of community members. The campus became a bustling hub of holiday support, with turkeys, hams, fresh produce, clothing, shoes, and toys available on a first-come, first-served basis.

At 11 a.m., the line stretched from the main gates, wrapped around the building, and extended a block and a half up Briarwood Road. Families came prepared with folding chairs, umbrellas for the sun, and wagons for food and toys.

Organizers checked in guests and distributed color-coded wristbands meant to ensure families got what they needed. While the system caused a little confusion, the event continued amid a mix of holiday cheer, frustration, anticipation, and great music. Families were limited to one turkey or ham and one produce box, as well as one coat or pair of shoes per family member, while supplies lasted.

In the corner of the campus, families enjoyed inflatable carnival games and other activities. A Live Well San Diego mobile office was also present for families needing free health services. Children proudly posed with their new toys as parents hauled wagons filled to the brim with holiday necessities back to their cars, underscoring the event’s impact on the community.
