Cars piled two lanes deep on Market Street, winding their way towards the back lot at the Jacob’s Center Market Creek this past Christmas Eve, where local families received holiday support at Dr. Carroll’s Christmas Eve Toy Distribution. Scores of local volunteers, from the Lincoln High Football team and Cheer Squad to the Haitian Bridge Alliance, braved the wind and rain to share their time and holiday Christmas spirit as all passed out toys just ahead of the Christmas holiday. Due to the forecasted rain, the event was a drive-thru this year.

“It’s a way to give back to the community. We love them,” said volunteer Patricia Rabago of The Science Fiction Coalition, who comes out every year to support via Light Of the City, one of the sponsors of last Wednesday’s event.

Bernadette Curtis, Head Cheer Coach at Lincoln High School, had this to say, “We’re here to show the girls that we need to help, especially during the holiday season. There are people that need the assistance.” The cheer squad certainly brought the Christmas Spirit, helping set up and singing early-morning cheers to families and volunteers who arrived early along the distribution line.

As the last cars rolled through, the message was simple: when neighbors show up for neighbors, San Diego’s holiday spirit shines—rain, wind, and all.
