During the last two decades, the people in the African nation of Sudan have experienced one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent memory. The crisis began in 2003, when government forces and their allied militia groups embarked on a campaign of mass destruction in that country’s Darfur region. Entire villages were destroyed. Millions were forcibly displaced. Hundreds of thousands of civilians were executed.

When the Sudanese people revolted in 2019 and deposed the architect of the aforementioned genocide, the country’s president Omar al-Bashir, it was hoped the nation would enjoy a period of peace and tranquility. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Since 2023, the two most powerful factions (government military forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces) have been fighting a civil war that has engulfed the entire nation. Thousands of men, women and children have perished. Millions more have been displaced. As well, the United Nations Children’s Fund has confirmed the existence of widespread hunger and malnutrition in parts of Sudan.

In my opinion, it is time for the people of San Diego to take a stand against this ongoing tragedy. Please contact President Trump and your members of Congress. Respectfully request that they end the suffering of our sisters and brothers in Sudan.

Respectfully submitted,
