Never Leave One Behind continues to lead by example by rewarding 14 deserving high school and college students with a check to help towards their upcoming collegiate expenses.

Last Saturday was the date and the Jackie Robinson YMCA was the location for this year’s third annual Johnnie Lee Gibson Scholarship Giveaway.

“Thanks to our generous donors, we were able to help more kids this year, 14 deserving kids with a thousand dollars each.”

Dorthey Lowery, the sister of the scholarship’s namesake Johnnie Lee Gibson, spoke to the youngsters about her late brother’s intelligence and love for knowledge.

Event host Dr. Inez Price said, “The future is in good hands with these young gentlemen and young ladies.”

Lincoln High graduate Havannah Ashton is on her way to Arizona State to major in nursing. “This money, with other scholarship donations, will allow me to focus on my studies. Me and my family really appreciate their help. That’s very kind of them.”

Morehouse College sophomore, Quincy McKinney, said, “I love this type of support from my community, it lets me know that my community has got my back. When I’m finished with school, one of my main goals is to give back, especially in Southeast San Diego.”

Amir Franks, a Lincoln High Honors student, shared, “I think it’s awesome that they recognized us for our hard work and the work we are about to put in at the next level. I want to honor my mother, Alicia Kurup (RIP), for raising a great son. I’m going to attend Sacramento State, and then I’m going to transfer and finish at Morehouse College.”

King David Dunn of Lincoln High School shared, “This Scholarship means a lot to me. I know they have been doing this for a while and they love to recognize people for their hard work and for their work in the community. I could go to any school, but I still want to play football, so I’m undecided between Mesa Junior College, Ventura, or a prep school.”

The sharp students were treated to applause and a room full of smiles. Everyone in attendance was treated to an all-you-can-eat feast provided by Herm & Herm Catering.

Congratulations to all the students, their parents, and all the teachers who helped this latest group of outstanding achievers.
