The George L. Stevens Senior Center recently marked a significant milestone, celebrating 20 years of dedicated service to older adults and the surrounding community. The Fourth District Senior Resource Center (located at the George L. Stevens senior center) hosted the anniversary event which brought together residents, community partners, and local leaders to reflect on the center’s impact and honor individuals who have contributed to its success.
A highlight of the celebration was the special recognition of three long-time supporters. Mrs. Johnie Crosby, 94, was honored for her enduring presence and involvement at the center. Mr. Herbert W. Argrow, 90, the center’s “Feeling Fit” exercise instructor, was recognized for his commitment to helping seniors stay active and healthy. Also acknowledged were the Prince Hall Masons, represented by Ron Dunlap, for their more than 30 years of steadfast support as “Seasoned Ambassadors” to the community.
Celebration highlights included award presentations recognizing the center’s contributions from several local and state leaders, including the offices of Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe, Senator Dr. Akilah Weber, Assemblymember Dr. LaShae Sharp Collins, and Councilmember Henry Foster III. Mayor Todd Gloria issued a proclamation proclaiming March 2, 2026 Fourth District Seniors Resource Center Day in the City of San Diego.
The event featured a resource fair with informational displays staffed by several community partners, including Aging & Independence Services, AARP, University of California, San Diego, San Diego Senior Foundation, JIREH Providers, and Falck Health Screenings. Additional participants included fraud prevention advocate Carla Crudup and Anila Health Care Services, offering attendees valuable information and services for healthy aging.
Guests also enjoyed a video presentation highlighting the center’s activities from 2006 to the present (courtesy of Dr. Michelle Jackson with UC San Diego) along with a variety of dishes from the food court, opportunity drawings, and reflections from members of the community.
Musical performances by Toot Bell and Wendell Cook energized the audience with inspirational gospel classics, including “A Change Is Gonna Come” and “I’m Still Here.”
As the George L. Stevens Senior Center looks ahead, the anniversary celebration served as both a tribute to its past and a reminder of its ongoing mission: “Embracing and enhancing seasoned minds and lives”.
