Willie Lee Avant, known affectionately to friends and family as Willie, was a man whose
laughter and faith resonated throughout his life. Born on January 27, 1944, in Lane, South Carolina, Willie’s journey began with his parents, Joseph and Elisabeth Avant. Though the family moved to Manning during his early years, his heart remained in Lane, where his grandparents, Mattie and Wesley Bradshaw, raised him. His early life was marked by a deep sense of belonging, simple rural joys, and the beginnings of a faith that would guide him.

Answering the call of duty, Willie left Lane to serve in the US Army around 1966. He later joined the US Navy and retired as a respected HTC Chief Petty Officer. He served aboard the USS Reeves and USS Pelileu during his 22-year career, including two tours in Vietnam where his bravery, leadership, and humor were ever present.

After his military career, Willie worked at ROHR Industries and later the Department of Public Works. In every role, he was more than a colleague—he was a mentor, a friend, and often the highlight of someone’s day. He was recognized by Fidelity Lodge #10 for 50 years of service in Freemasonry.

Willie’s thirst for knowledge was evident in his certifications in firearms, auto repair instruction, welding, and aerospace manufacturing, which he used to support his family and serve others.

His faith was the cornerstone of his life. Willie lived as a testament to Christian values, blending humor with wisdom. He could quote Scripture as easily as he could deliver a joke, and his presence in church was constant.

A devoted father, Willie raised two daughters, LaToya Colter (Neely) and Natasha Avant, with love and commitment. His legacy lives on through his six grandchildren and his great-grandson. His sisters, Sadie Avant Williams and Shirley Avant Lewis, also carry forward his spirit.

Willie enjoyed skeet shooting, welding, travel, and collecting firearms and war memorabilia.

On February 25, 2026, Willie passed away in San Diego, California, leaving a legacy of love, laughter, and faith. He will be remembered for the joy he brought and the love he left behind.

The family extends special thanks to Pastor Donnell Townsend, Ms.Stenella Bassett, The Avant Family, USS Pelileu and USS Reeves groups, Fidelity Lodge #10, VFW Post 1512, friends, and loved ones for your support. God bless you.
