San Diego, CA: The San Diego Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation’s Annual Golf Classic is their signature event to raise scholarship funds for deserving graduating seniors in the San Diego Unified School District. The 24th Annual MLK Golf Classic recently took place on Saturday, April 11, 2014 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Resort located at 17550 Bernardo Oaks Dr., 92128. The MLK Golf Classic drew participation of celebrity golfers that included Darren Sproles, Marshal Faulk, Garry Templeton, City of San Diego City Councilmen Mark Kersey and Scott Sherman to name a few.

Participants were greeted by Reece Jarrett, President of the San Diego MLK Foundation Board of Directors and special guest CA State Assemblymember Brian Maienshein. Tee time opened at 11:00 am. Following a round of golf at the 18-hole California Championship golf course participants enjoyed an awards dinner banquet with special guests Congressman Juan Vargas and San Diego Unified School District’s Marne Foster, Vice-president of the Board of Trustees and Superintendent Cindy Marten. Live entertainment was provided by CK and the Gospel of Jazz band.

“The San Diego Unified School District is extremely blessed to receive scholarships from the San Diego Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation. Your continued support has provided students the opportunity to pursue a higher education annually. I would like to thank Reece and Regina Jarrett, all the sponsors, staff and volunteers that made this event a success for our community’s children and for keeping Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s Dream Alive! I look forward to celebrating with all of you again next year at the 25th Annual MLK Golf Classic and for the presentation of scholarships next month at the Malcolm X Library,” states Trustee Foster.

“The 24th Annual MLK Golf Classic was a huge success due to the support of our dedicated sponsors. Without their support we would not be able to provide meaningful scholarships to our most deserving youth in the San Diego Unified School District. I would like to give special thanks to our sponsors State Farm Insurance and Taylor Made for their major sponsorship of this year’s event. I am honored to share that we are approaching $500,000 in college scholarships. I hope we will be able to surpass this milestone at our 25th Annual MLK Golf Classic next year,” shares Reece Jarrett, President, San Diego Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation.

The San Diego MLK JR. Foundation has served graduating seniors from the San Diego Unified School District with scholarships, college preparatory counseling and other resources such as Scholastic Aptitude Test preparation courses. They also provide students with financial support to assist in their transition to college life, which quite often means moving far away from home.  The vast majority of this work is provided through a network of volunteers and does not impact scholarship dollars.  The presentation of the 2014 MLK Scholarships will take place on Thursday, May 29, 2014, 5:30 pm at the Malcolm X Library, 5148 Market Street, San Diego, 92114.
