San Diego, CA | March 20, 2017 – San Diego City College will host the 3rd Annual Social Justice in Education Conference: A Call to Action on Wednesday and Thursday, March 22 and 23, 2017. This yearly conference is designed to bring together student organizations, education reformers, local non-profit organizations, policy makers, and other community constituents to share experiences and resources, raise awareness about challenges we face as a society, and to develop collaborations and foster actions that bring about meaningful social transformation.
The featured speaker on Wednesday will be Jasiri X talking on Race, Gender and the Power of Hip Hop. An award-winning Hip Hop artist and political and socially conscious activist, Jasire X is a founding member of the anti-violence community organization, 1Hood Media Academy, a collective of artists and activists using art to raise awareness about social justice. Jasiri X has received numerous honors and awards for his transformative work, including being named a USA Cummings Fellow, a Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Artist as Activist Fellow and a BMe Leader Fellow.
The featured speaker on Thursday will be the Texas Poet Laureate Lauri Ann Guerrero with her talk on Thinking is My Fighting: A Call to Arms. Guerrero’s artistry and outspokenness has earned her the Academy of American Poets Prize from Smith College, the 2012Andres Montoya Poetry Prize, and the 2016 Helen C. Smith Ward for Best Book of Poetry from the Texas Institute of Letters. Her award-winning works include A Tongue in the Mouth of the Dying (University of Notre Dame Press 2013),
Babies under the Skin (Panhandler Publishing 2007), and a Crown for Gumecindo (Aztlan Libre Press 2015).
The two-day conference will include more than two dozen break-out sessions covering topics such as Latino/a Rights and Popular Education; Climate Change and Climate Justice; Islamaphobia, Understanding the Problem, Challenging its Manifestations; Mental Wellness as an Act of Revolution; Sex, Gender and Rights in 2017; the Fight for Dignity and Justice for All Immigrants, and Movements in the Age of Trump. Additionally, the Wednesday evening program includes visual and audio monologue performances (VAMP) in the Saville Theatre and on Thursday evening stories about “Reclaiming our Bodies” with bkSoul and RTC artists.
The conference is expected to draw 250-300 participants and is open to all those interested in social justice in education with a special emphasis on faculty, staff, administrators, and students.
The conference is part of efforts to build a nationwide network of people in the field of education who recognize the place of social justice in education as a tool for creating informed, critical, and engaged students.

Many of our programs, such as peace studies, gender studies, labor studies, Chicano/Chicana studies, Black studies, and others help students be a voice for those who are often not heard.”
