San Diego, CA: On Saturday, January 18, 2014 the St. Stephen’s Cathedral Church of God in Christ Sunshine Band presented their 2nd Annual “A Night With the King” stage play at the Educational Cultural Complex located at 4343 Ocean View Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92113.
Before a near sold out play the audience enjoyed five of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s greatest speeches, a special tribute to President Barack Obama, President Nelson Mandela and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“This is our second year doing this production and each year highlights new aspects of Dr. King’s legacy. The St. Stephen’s Cathedral Sunshine Band choir partners with Maxine Clark, Director and Producer of this production and Our Living Heritage, an annual Black History month production highlighting historic leaders from the Diaspora to the present. I couldn’t be more thankful to the actors that participate each year, or more proud of my Sunshine Band members for their hard work and professional delivery,” states Gina Surgeon, St. Stephen’s Cathedral Sunshine Choir President/Director.
“I had an awesome experience! There was lot of people that came to support “A Night with the King”. I feel really good and happy to see some people take the time out of their busy schedule to watch us kids,” shares Cierra Cloud, Member, SSCSB. Nine year old Jeremiah Carr a 3rd grader at Shadow Mountain’s Christian Elementary School has been practicing his role as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. since August 2013. “I really enjoy acting! I would like to possibly pursue a career to become an actor. The “A Night With The King” stage play was good practice for me.”
Cynthia Gilliam, member, St. Stephen’s COGIC states, “Jeremiah, Cierra and the whole St. Stephen’s Sunshine Band did an excellent job tonight! The play was a good reminder that we as a people need to continue the march forward. Change has come. However, the state of the City is not our final destination! We still need to improve and produce a quality education for all students. We need livable wage jobs for a brighter future. I am thankful that our children received great community support tonight. I hope we all continue to support our young people this way all year round.”
