The first luncheon of this format was the UNCF Governor’s Luncheon, it was held in 2003 in Florida – hosted by Governor Jeb Bush. Since then annual Governors’ luncheons have been held in many states such as Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina, Virginia and Oklahoma. Other UNCF offices around the country began hosting Mayor’s and Leaders luncheons to benefit UNCF member institutions and scholarships for low-income college students that are residents of the participating state. UNCF’s schools and scholarships are an important part of any statewide effort to narrow the educational attainment gap.
UNCF and other historically black colleges and universities are an important part of any statewide and national effort to narrow the educational attainment gap. Today – a college degree is the minimum entry-level requirement for almost every well-paying career. UNCF plays a critical role in enabling more than 60,000 students each year to attend college, and is helping to close the educational attainment gap between minorities and the majority population.
Supporting these luncheons complement companies commitment to increasing educational opportunities and the overall well being of the state’s residents and communities. Because college graduates earn higher incomes than non-graduates, their support for the luncheons is an investment in the many future teachers, business leaders, engineers, physicians and other professionals who will graduate from UNCF member institutions and other college to become productive participants in their communities, states’ and national economy.
