It was old school vs new school at Morse High’s new and improved baseball field for their annual Alumni vs current varsity baseball team. Morse’s collection of former Tigers gave out baseball lessons to the newest addition of Tiger base stealers, pitchers and home-run hitters.
Quintin Berry (’03) of the Baltimore Orioles, Paul Anderson (’86), Rashaan Griffith (’00) and Dallas Booker (’99) were some of the veteran-alum Tigers that gave the 2014 varsity team an old-school whipping. The varsity Tigers did show flashes of greatness and potential at times but they could not overcome the experience and power displayed by the alumni cast of Tiger greats.
“Our team is still a work in progress and we have some pretty good players, but we still got some work to do. We didn’t play in the winter leagues this season and so that puts us a little behind, but all we can do is work hard and see what happens,” said Morse manager Jack Womack. Morse’s alumni Tigers made fewer errors and touched home plate more times than their younger contemporaries.
“We are trying to rebuild the baseball program and get some community support and hopefully start something big; we had about 50 alumni show up and participate in the game today,” class of ‘99 and current JV Coach Dallas Booker said.
‘’It’s also good for the current players to see and meet the former players and realize some of the rich history here at Morse,” coach Dallas added.
After a few hours of curve balls, change–ups, sliders, laughs, memories and moments of glory, it was time for Morse’s Mightiest Tigers to say goodbye to their field of dreams until next year.
Now it’s time for the current roster of Tigers to get ready for the upcoming season.
“Today was fun and it’s always good to come back and support my school, see some of my teammates and meet the new players. I would definitely come back and do it again,” said Quintin Berry, Class of 2003.
