Lincoln Hornets head football Coach David Dunn called NFL player Jamar Taylor of the Miami Dolphins to come and visit Vic Player Stadium and talk to the current roster of football Hornets.
The Hornets were performing their usual Saturday morning drills and calisthenics until Coach David switched gears and had all players head towards the bleachers to hear some valuable information.
Jamar Taylor pulled no punches when speaking to Lincoln’s student athletes about the facts of life in southeast San Diego.
“Sometimes they need to hear things from people close to their own age group. Jamar grew up right down the street from here so they can definitely relate to him,” said head coach David Dunn. JT let the Hornets know there are no short cuts to success, and he encouraged them to be serious about their education; that bad behavior leads to bad situations.
“I played Pop Warner football for VP and I grew up wanting to go to Lincoln, but it was closed for rebuilding so I went to Helix. I’m from Southeast so I know what you guys are dealing with,” said Jamar. He also used the time to do some personal workout drills with University of Oregon football player, Tyree Roberson, and other NFL hopefuls.
“I always knew Jamar would amount to something. I’ve known him since he was a baby – he would never let peer pressure distract him from his goals, and his work ethic is off the chain,” said Lincoln’s defensive coordinator Jared Stuts.
Struts added, “If our players would listen to him they could do some positive things on and off the football field.”
After sitting in the bleachers listening to words of wisdom from Jamar and Lincoln’s coaching staff it was time for the Hornets to run up and down the stadium bleachers and go through their position drills in preparation for the upcoming football season.
“I wanted to come down here and talk to the kids in our community. A lot of times people who make it from here don’t come back, but that’s something I will continue to do,” said Jamar Taylor.
