The Labor day celebrators endured the boiling hot temperatures last Monday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at historic Mountain View Park. However, plenty of shade and a consistent flow of cool breezes kept the heat dramatics low-key.

Old friends and new acquaintances were able to enjoy the many accommodations provided by the OG Sandbox organizers and friends. There was also a special awards presentation for legendary community leaders, past and present, for their commitment and many contributions to Southeast San Diego.

“I think this was wonderful today, but I wish we could stop being divided and forget about the politics and come together as one and work things out. I know we can and we will,” OG Sandbox original, Sonny Meals, shared.

The OG Sandbox organizers received a proclamation of achievement award from the Mayor’s office for their many years of dedicated community service.

“We really appreciate the Mayor for the award. That’s real cool, and I got an award from Louise and that was really cool also. Thanks,” said Sandbox president, Aaron Gibson.

“I think things went well today. The attendance was nice. We didn’t get overwhelmed by the heat, but our hearts are heavy with the loss of two of our biggest supporters this year,” Gibson continued. “Tony Marshall, aka Pretty Tony, and my sister, Sharon Gibson. They would have been here without a doubt. But, I know they were here in spirit, watching over us today. Rest in peace.”
