For over 53 extraordinary years, Pastor Dr. Walter G. Wells has not only led a church, he has created a legacy that has transformed generations, has strengthened communities, and has forever impacted the spiritual foundation of San Diego.
What began in 1973 as a faithful pastoral assignment at the Mt. Erie Baptist Church, has grown into one of the most legendary and historic ministries in the region. Through unwavering teaching, preaching, visionary leadership, and a heart committed to God’s people, Dr. Wells has become more than a pastor. He has become a living pillar of faith, hope, excellence, and a leader of community empowerment.
Under his leadership, Dr. Wells expanded his ministry, strengthened educational initiatives such as the Mt. Erie Christian Academy, enhanced worship experiences, and built bridges throughout San Diego’s faith community and beyond. His voice, leadership, and vision have remained steadfast through changing times and continue to inspire people from every walk of life.
Alongside Dr. Wells, Sister Frankie Wells has faithfully served with grace, wisdom, compassion, and unwavering support. Together, they have poured love into countless lives through their ministry, mentorship, outreach, education, counseling, and so much more. Their leadership has helped produce generations of believers, leaders, educators, and others who aspire to carry their teachings forward. On June 14, 2026, Mt. Erie celebrated Dr. Wells’ 53 years of faithful and impactful service, but what followed thereafter was soon to be a day to be remembered.
On July 17, 2026, four generations of the Wells family along with fellow Pastors, Associate Pastors, Clergy, family, friends, and the community, gathered to witness history: The Dr. Walter G. Wells Street Honorary Naming Ceremony, hosted by the Office of Councilmember Henry L. Foster III. With an average San Diego temperature of 74°F, this day may have started out as another ordinary day, but it did not end that way. God stepped in as those in attendance witnessed a blessing unfold right here on Earth. This moment marked not just a ceremonial celebration, but the etching of legacy onto the very streets of the city Dr. Wells helped develop. To have a street bear Dr. Wells’ name from Imperial Avenue to Logan Avenue is a testament to a life devoted to service, sacrifice, integrity, and spiritual leadership.
Long after this celebration, those who travel along Dr. Walter G. Wells Street, and all who know and love him, will be reminded of a man whose faithfulness helped shape the heart of a community far beyond the church walls. In extending Dr. Wells’ legacy to future generations and those who encounter his name for the first time, may they all be inspired to learn about the life, faith, and legacy of a servant whose impact continues to guide and bless generations.
In closing, Reverend Nelson Roberts, who has been at the Mt. Erie Baptist Church for over 37 years states:
“The impact and influence of Dr. Walter G. Wells through his preaching,
teaching, and lifestyle, is far reaching to everyone who has been blessed to
be in his presence. Yes! It is befitting to honor this great man for all his labor
over 53 years with a street name. However, the man, Dr. Walter G.
Wells, will forever be present and live in our hearts.”
