On the evening of Juneteenth, an engaged audience was inspired by the Black Storytellers of San Diego, Inc.’s innovative presentation, “Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom,” at MOXIE Theatre.

The stage featured African textiles as a backdrop for colorful framed artwork by Calvin Manson. The original presentation opened by honoring the heritage of oral storytelling tradition, beginning with Anansi and continuing through 250 years of untold stories about African American pursuit of freedom and our contributions to this nation’s evolution.

Ensemble readings of poetry, family tales of beginnings as “freedmen,”  migration sagas of spreading from sea to shining sea, and songs of freedom were woven together throughout the evening.

The Celebration was capped by the uplifting melodies of 3MC Ministry Ensemble from North County.
