San Diego residents have until Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024, to fill out an online survey – also available in Spanish – and share their input about the characteristics and qualities they wish to see in the next San Diego Police Department (SDPD) leader.
The survey asks community members what priorities they deem important, how SDPD should engage and interact with the community and what characteristics the next Chief should possess.
The City’s Human Resources Department hosted a series of community forums throughout the month of January so that San Diegans could voice their concerns and opinions about the incoming law enforcement leader. Residents who were not able to attend any of the community forums are especially encouraged to take this survey.
San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit was promoted to the top position in 2018 and announced his retirement last year. Chief Nisleit will complete his service in June 2024. Nisleit joined the SDPD in 1988, following in the footsteps of his father, who also had a long career as a police officer with the department.
Candidates for the job will undergo a series of interviews, including one conducted by a panel of community leaders nominated by City Councilmembers and the Mayor.
The process to hire a new Chief of Police, outlined in Council Policy 300-08, calls for the Mayor to appoint a candidate to be confirmed by San Diego City Council. For more information on the recruitment process, please visit the City’s Police Chief Recruitment webpage.
