HENDERSON, DERRICK OBIT-1DERRICK LENN HENDERSON was born on November 23, 1955 in San Diego, CA. He was the second of two children born to the union of Cary Lee Henderson and LaManda Crosby Henderson. His father preceded him in death. Derrick received his formal education in San Diego and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1973. He was a star athlete and mastered every sport he participated in, especially football. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy, where he served our country from 1974 until he was honorably discharged in 1976. Later the same year of his discharge from the Navy, he met Lisa Martinez of Chicago, IL. This union was blessed with a daughter, Chalise Nichole. In 1979, Derrick pursued his natural talent for cosmetology and went to Bay Vista Beauty College, where he met and fell in love with Wanda Doxey of San Diego. They were married on March 27, 1981. Their union was blessed with his youngest daughter, Whitney Lynn. During this time, Derrick had become established and well-known as a cosmetologist extraordinaire, until he saw fit to make a career change, and went on to work with the elderly at the Neighborhood House Association until God called him home. Derrick had impeccable taste in his attire, cars and jewelry. He had no problems entering a fashion show or two. In 1981, he was nominated one of the ten best dressed in San Diego. His love for God was evident through his faithful attendance at his church, Logan Temple A.M.E Zion, weekly bible study, his service on the usher board, and the youth choir during his younger years. God saw the road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb, and he gently closed those loving eyes and whispered “Peace Be Thine”. Derrick Lenn Henderson passed away at his residence on March 5, 2016 at 10:55 P.M. He will be greatly remembered for his vibrant and infectious smile, his fun loving ways and his giving spirit. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his loving family: two loving daughters, Chalise Henderson Vorise and Whitney Henderson; his devoted mother, LaManda Henderson; his brother, Christopher L. Henderson; son in-law Jerome Vorise Jr; six grandchildren, Frederick McClure Jr., Destiny M. Lewis, Sha’Maya C. McClendon, Myjah R. Robinson, Jordan N. Robinson, and Jerome Vorise III all of San Diego, CA, and a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends. Services were held Thursday, March 17, 2016 at Logan Temple A.M.E. Zion Church, interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Final arrangements were entrusted to Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary.
