Dorothy Lee Elizabeth Jerail Zero Dixison Knight
October 1, 1930 – March 31, 2016
Dorothy was born October 1, 1930 to Jerry and Bertha Dixison, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She received her formal education in Bastrop, Louisiana and San Diego, California. Dorothy met and united in holy matrimony to Roosevelt Knight, on March 22, 1947 and to this union, eight children were born. She was affectionately called “Bay” by her children and was the endearing name used by her family and others close to the family. Bay possessed a quiet nature; until she had to discipline, then it was a different story. Preceding her in death were her daughter, Laverne (Speedy), two sons – Robert and Levell, and her caring husband Roosevelt. Caring for other was a gift from God. Dorothy’s long career in health care was evident for nearly five decades employed at Kearny Mesa Convalescent Home. The patients loved her gentle touch and warm smiles. After 46 years and the beautiful age of 78, she retired in 2008. Reaching out and looking out for others continued to be a ministry for Dorothy. She gathered food from food banks to give to the shut in and young mothers. Often her home was was a home to others until they could get back on their feet. She just didn’t stop! Dorothy was an active and dedicated member of the Thirty-first Street Seventh-day Adventist Church, for over fifty years, serving in Community Services, as a Deaconess (Dorcas Society), on the Usher Board, in kitchen ministries with her best friend Evelyn Rowe, and with King’s Daughters. Dorothy was a faithful member and witness for Christ. On Thursday morning, at 12:01 a.m., March 31, 2016, Dorothy woke up in Paradise to Eternal Life with no more pain or sorrow. She now resides in a new building not made by hands. She is survived by her five daughters: Rose Knight, Aline Sanders (Jim), Bertha Knight Marshall, Genetha Knight, and Deborah Knight – all of San Diego; eleven grandchildren: Maurice Hickerson, Portland, OR, Latisha McCellan, LaTonya McCellan, David Knight (Vanessa), Roshaun Crooms, Fredericksburg, VA, Raymond (Jack) Robinson, Lanell Spencer, Kenya Thomas (Jase), My’eshia Steward, Kennetha Jones (De’anne), Nar’vesha Price all of San Diego; thirty – two great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, one brother-in-law Leon (Joann) Knight of Los Angeles, sister-in-law Esteen Knight of Los Angeles, and a host of nieces, nephews, church family, friends to mourn her passing.
