Jack Arthur Hutchinson, Jr.
July 31, 1950 – April 9, 2016
Jack Arthur Hutchinson Jr. “the Gentle Giant” was born to Jack Arthur Sr. & Christine Effie Hutchinson on July 31, 1950 at Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego, California. Jack graduated from George Washington High School, Naval Station, Guam in 1968. While living in Guam he taught himself how to surf and became quite good at it competing with some of the best local islanders. Upon his return to the United States, he attended City College where he played football. In 1970 Jack enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served two years before being honorably discharged. In 1974, Jack enlisted in the United States Army where he served 4 years as a Gunner for the Abrams Main Battle Tank. A note of interest: While in the Army, Jack served his last two years in Germany. In 1976 he became the middleweight boxing champion for the Army. During that time, being in the right place at the wrong time, Jack found himself in a position to deliver a baby, using his shoelace to tie off the baby’s cord. Army based newspaper headlines read “Army’s Middleweight Boxing Chap Delivers Baby”, that was our Jack; he had the hands of a boxer yet gentle enough to deliver a baby; he was truly “The Gentle Giant”. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Jack’s employment varied in nature. He held jobs such as Construction Worker, Liquor Store Clerk at Paul Lowes, School Bus Driver and Instructor for Laidlaw Transportation, Bingo Caller at Barona Indian Reservation, long haul truck driver, a Pipe fitter at Pacific Production Plumbing in El Cajon and finally he worked as a sheet metal specialist at the Paul Revere Copper Company in Massachusetts. Jack’s favorite pastimes were listening to old school music, playing dominoes and card games, watching TV and most of all making people laugh. Jacks grand-kids and great-grand-kids were crazy about their Papa Jack. One of Jacks greatest joys was interacting with them, teaching them how to play baseball, football and how to ride their bikes. He was their doctor when they got their “ow-ees”, a human trampoline for the little ones to jump up and down on, a counselor when the older kids needed someone to talk to and the family comedian when we needed a little laugh. He was very protective of all his family members. He enjoyed the weekend get-aways to his sister’s home in Oceanside and the family gatherings frequently held at his brother’s home. Jack truly loved his family and being a part of family events and you could always count on him being the life and laughter of the party. Anyone who knew Jack will tell you that Jacks biggest asset was his sense of humor and his ability to make people laugh. He had such a big heart which is why he was able to give so much love to his family and friends. It didn’t take much to make Jack happy. He was non-materialistic, even tempered individual with a kindred soul; a man who derived pleasure from the simple things in life; a warm snuggly blanket and Law & Order on TV made him a contented man. He expressed the love he had for Carole, his soul mate and companion who for 20 years stood by his side weathering the storms and basking in the sunshine. Jack will be sorely missed and now sadly the light that once shined brightly in his presence for so many years has forever gone out. Jack is preceded in death by; his Father and Mother, Jack Arthur and Christine Effie Hutchinson, Sister, Sharon Ann Polk, younger Brother, Anthony Lee Hutchinson and Step-Daughter, Stacey Silva. Jack leaves to mourn his passing; his Loving Companion and Lifelong Partner, Carole Chantre, Daughter, Christine Hutchinson; Sister and Husband, Cynthia Marie and Lester William Steptoe; younger Brother and Wife, Steven and Lorraine Hutchinson; Brother-in-Law, Leonard Polk; Sister-in-Laws, Donna Noblin and Brenda Howard, Step-daughter, Renee’ Davis, Step-son Craig Chantre; and a host of nieces, nephews, grand-kids, great grand-kids, relatives and friends.
