Jeweldean (Jewel) Mitchell was born on May 17, 1933, in Gregory, Arkansas, the
daughter of Decie Tyler Young and Luther Mitchell. From an early age, Jewel accepted
Christ as her Savior at St. Paul Methodist Church in Augusta, Arkansas. Jewel graduated from Carver High School in 1952. She continued her education at Dunbar Jr. College in Little Rock, Arkansas.
In 1952, she married Ivory C. Nevels, and they moved to St. Louis, Missouri. In 1954, they welcomed their first child, Chester, affectionately known as “Ronnie”. In 1956, Jewel welcomed two daughters, Arnetta (Sis) and Patricia (Pat). In 1958, the family settled in San Diego, California. They welcomed their daughter Peggy in 1959 and son Randolph (Randy) in 1962. She pursued entrepreneurship alongside her husband. They established Mission Janitorial Service in Mission Valley, California. She served as President of the Soroptimist Club in Mission Valley. In 1985, Jewel moved to Los Angeles where she resided for 18 years.
In 2006, Jewel married Herbert Hoover Guest. She moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for six years. She returned to San Diego in 2012, and worshiped at New Assurance Baptist Church under the late Pastor, Rickey Laster. She loved watching The Price Is Right, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and NBA.
Jewel enjoyed playing cards, horse racing, roller derby (Los Angeles Thunderbirds), walking, cooking, traveling and gardening. Her garden was her sanctuary and her personal therapist.
Jewel also devoted her heart to preserving family history, she was our storyteller, our family historian, and our connection to our ancestors.
On December 10, 2025, Jewel was peacefully called home to be with the Lord after a
long and fulfilling life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Decie Tyler Young and Luther Mitchell, her second husband Herbert Guest, her siblings; Lillie, Hubert, Mary, and Doris Mae, and her first grandson Kierreron (Boobie).
Jewel leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, strength, and service. She is survived by her sister Juanita Johnson, her son Chester “Ronnie” (Deborah), daughters; Arnetta (Sis), Patricia (Pat), and Peggy, son Randolph “Randy” (Kanani), grandchildren; Autumn, Ashley (Pierre), April (Jay), Alexandria, Kyle, Chad, and Alexis, great-grandchildren; Riley, Jonnie, Joie, Jacob, Carson, Arlyn, and Chloe; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Though she has peacefully departed this life, her presence and influence will forever remain in the hearts of those who cherished her.
