Earlier this month, the family of late San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler announced their plans to transfer majority ownership of the team to an investment group led by husband-and-wife duo Jose Feliance and Kwanza Jones.

The deal has a few more steps to clear before being finalized, including a formal vote among all MLB clubs, which is set to take place at the league’s quarterly meeting in June. Once the agreement is approved, Kwanza Jones will make history as the first Black woman in MLB’s 123 years to hold majority ownership of a major league baseball team.

The sale comes at a record-breaking value of 3.9 billion dollars. However, this would not be the first time Jones has made her mark or shaken up the scene. Along with her husband, the couple has invested nearly 20 million dollars in equity and education and holds several board seats in various art and education organizations.

In a joint statement released through the Padres, Feliciano and Jones shared:

“This is about more than baseball — it’s about boosting the pride, energy, and connection that define the Padres, investing in community, deepening belonging, and ensuring this team remains accessible and endures for generations. We are all in — with the goal of bringing a World Series championship to San Diego.”
