Loma Louvenia Johnson
October 9, 1915 – August 22, 2016
LOMA LOUVENIA WITHERSPOON JOHNSON was born on October 9, 1915 and transitioned to her eternal rest on August 22, 2016. Loma was the daughter of Sam Witherspoon and Loma Alexander. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Mack H. Johnson; her parents; her brother, James McCrimmon; her sisters, Iola Beatty, Dorothy Saunders, Thelma Witherspoon, and Mildred Harris. Loma spent her early childhood with her maternal grandmother in Lancaster County, SC. She later moved to live with her father in E. Spencer, NC where she graduated from Dunbar High School. As her ultimate goal was to become a registered nurse, she became a beautician in order to save for nursing school. She also did other odd jobs to support herself and finance her career goal. After much hard work and perseverance, she graduated from Columbia School of Nursing in Columbia, SC. During her tenure at SC State Hospital, she met the love of her life, Mack Johnson of the United States Navy. They married and transferred to the Pacific Northwest. After a tour in Spain, they transferred to San Diego, CA. Loma loved to cook, sew (because she loved to dress well and look good!), make pottery and travel and take cruises with family and friends. She loved God, family, and community. Along with her friend and neighbor, Mrs. Johnnie Byrd, she operated her district polling place for many years. “Aunt Bena” or “Aunt Loma”, as she was called with great affection, didn’t have biological children but she had many nieces and nephews with whom she could share her wisdom. Family left to cherish her memory are her sister-in-law, Willis Johnson Charles; her beloved nephews and nieces, Jacques W. McIlwaine; Cornel Alvin Johnson, III; Gregory Mack Johnson; Thomas Jones, III; Frank C. Brown, II; and Charles C. Brown; Michael McCrimmons; Dorothy Cousar; Maxine Weathers; Corinne Beatty; Dianne McIlwaine Butler; Juana McIlwaine Farley; Judith Ethel Jones; Kathlyn Clarice Boykin and Lyne M. Pitts. Special cousins, Alta McIlwaine, Rev. Reginald Massey, Col. Adele Hodges, USMC Ret.; and Sgt. Rosena Taylor, USMC; godchild, Gloria McWhirter; her friend, Edie Grice, who was more like a sister; her friends of many years, Johnnie Byrd, Cathy Ramsey, Joe Stone, Wanda Barren and Pastor Tony Wolfe. Services were held Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary Memorial Chapel.
