Mary Ella Boatner, age 98, of San Diego, California, passed away on May 27, 2026, from natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, wisdom, and quiet strength.
She was born on January 29, 1928, in Oaknolia, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, to Robert Thomas Sr. and Mattie Bell. From an early age, she embodied the values of hard work, devotion, and perseverance that guided her throughout her life. She was a beloved sister, wife, mother, and friend. She was married to Samuel Boatner and was the devoted mother of four sons: Thomas Boatner, Donald Boatner, Alvin Boatner, and Arnold Boatner.
After moving to San Diego in 1958, Mary Ella returned to school, earning her G.E.D. and an Associate of Arts degree in Early Child Development. She made the Dean’s List twice and was recognized in Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. She later worked as a preschool aide after many years of domestic work, reflecting her lifelong commitment to service and care for others.
Her life was deeply rooted in Christian faith. Known as a woman of prayer, wisdom, and
encouragement, she lived her beliefs through kindness, endurance, and steadfast trust in God. She was a longtime member of the Greater Israelite Church of God in Christ in San Diego, where she served as a Church Mother, on the Mothers Board and Deaconess Board, and as Assistant Financial Treasurer for the San Diego United District Prayer and Bible Band from 1989 to 1995.
Mary Ella enjoyed reading the newspaper, following local and national news, and staying informed about the world around her. Her thoughtful nature and steady perspective enriched many conversations. As Proverbs 31:26 reminds us, “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.” That verse reflected her life of wisdom, kindness, and faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Katie Thomas, brothers; Robert Thomas Jr. and Isaiah Thomas, granddaughter Marilyn Brunson, and great-grandson Reginald Anderson III.
She is survived by her four sons, stepdaughter Dellene Johnson, sister Idella White, brothers; Joe Louis Thomas, Emanuel Dominic, and Samuel Dominic, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and loved ones.
Her memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved her, and her legacy of faith, perseverance, wisdom, and love will continue to inspire future generations.
