Honoring the brave men and women who gave their lives in sacrifice to our country, Memorial Day marked a powerful return of Operation Flags for Vets to Miramar National Cemetery (MNC), under the leadership of Mike Fuqua and the Rotary International District 5340’s Military Coordinating Committee. Over 300 dedicated volunteers from San Diego and Imperial counties came together in a moving expression of gratitude and remembrance, placing 20,000 American flags—one for each veteran laid to rest at MNC.
It was a community service effort, but also a heartfelt tribute – honoring memories, and embracing legacy.
“With flags waving gently across every row and columbarium wall, the cemetery became a canvas of sacrifice and unity—showing what’s possible when a community comes together with deep respect and purpose,” said Michael Brunker, Rotary International District 5340’s Assistant Governor, Area 1.
The day demonstrated the profound strength of a community united by respect and remembrance.
