Michelle Obama had planned to deliver the commencement speech at a Kansas high school graduation but canceled after over 2,000 people added their names to a petition protesting her appearance.
Mrs. Obama had accepted the invite from the Topeka school, but after students and parents were informed that they’d have to limit the number of friends and family members who could attend the ceremony, there was an immediate backlash.
“Once we learned about the concerns of some students, we were eager to find a solution that enabled all of the students and their families to celebrate the special day,” the first lady’s press secretary, Maria Cristina Gonzalez Noguera, told the Associated Press. (read more)
