The official statement from the California Hawaii NAACP reads:
“Last week, a Tiktok video from River Valley High School surfaced, showing three Black students in a locker room being auctioned off as slaves in a staged prank. The video and actions of the students involved is absolutely deplorable and we are disgusted that this incident ever took place.
Mock slave auctions and other racist actions on the sports field have been occurring with an alarming and increased frequency in schools throughout California. The CA/HI NAACP will be pushing the State for data to be collected statewide so that we can understand the prevalence of how often the activities are occurring in schools throughout California. Further, we are calling on all California high schools to 1) implement regulations that ensure the safety of students of color 2) continue to hold conversations with students on why this behavior is racist and unacceptable, also holding students involved accountable and 3) continue to educate students on the history of Black Americans in this country.
The NAACP will not sit idly by and allow for the racist behaviors to continue to grow legs and run around our California school system. Rick L. Callender, ESQ. CA/HI NAACP President
