The Port of San Diego is celebrating National Arts Month throughout October with special events and activities.

In recognition of October being named “National Arts and Humanities Month” by President Barack Obama, the Port of San Diego’s Office of Arts & Culture has developed a month-long calendar of special events and activities that encourage Port employees and the public to appreciate the impact of art on their lives and in their communities.

Three free public events will be held in October to give the public an opportunity to engage in a dialogue with artists and to view and experience an interactive public art installation.

On Tuesday, October 18, 2016, the Port is teaming up with Woodbury School of Architecture to host a creative conversation with artists Margaret Noble and Jose Parral. The discussion is from 6 to 7 p.m. at Woodbury School of Architecture, 2212 Main Street, San Diego, CA 92112.

Margaret Noble is a San Diego, California-based sound artist who creates interactive artwork experiences. She has exhibited her work extensively, both nationally and internationally, including in England, Portugal, Canada, Mexico, France, Austria and Puerto Rico.

Jose Parral is an award winning designer and educator specializing in landscape architecture. In 2007 he was the recipient of the Kate L. Brewster Rome Prize in Landscape Architecture, American Academy in Rome. He has been associated with landscape architecture firms throughout California and currently operates a small design practice. He has been associate professor at Woodbury University San Diego, California since 2008.

Noble will be showcasing her artwork titled “Time Strata” on Cesar Chavez Pier, located adjacent to Cesar Chavez Park during two weekends in October. The interactive artwork consists of three sound sculptures: “Tide Rattler,” “Wheel Chime” and “Wind Harp.” Noble will use several microphones around and under the Cesar Chavez Pier to feed sounds into a mixer, which then feeds into four digital consoles that allow participants to hear the sounds and alter them. “Time Strata” will be featured from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 22 and Saturday, October 29, 2016.

In addition to these events, Port staff has developed self-guided walking tours of the Port’s public art collection. There are 70 public artworks throughout the Port’s five member cities of Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego. The self-guided tours will be distributed via social media and brochures to encourage the public to get involved and enjoy a sampling of the artworks around the waterfront at their leisure. The tours are mapped out within walking distance and incorporate the Coronado bayside, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista Bayfront, National City Marina District, San Diego’s Embarcadero and Shelter Island.
