Brother Carl Muhammad is no stranger to Southeast San Diego. The owner of Salaam Fish House and Chairman of Isis Entertainment, Muhamad is active in the community. On May 2, 2015 while in Las Vegas, Nevada enjoying some time with family, Muhamad unfortunately suffered a major stroke, causing significant brain injury. After being hospitalized for nearly 2 weeks he was stable enough to be transported back to San Diego, transferring to a San Diego medical center to further treat the issues, where he now has been for over 2 months. Muhamad’s close family and friends have been by his side daily, and within the last two weeks, those with him have reported involuntary movement in certain parts of his body, but he remains non-responsive to verbal commands.
In 1987 after experiencing the unfortunate passing of their 5 year old daughter, Natosha, Muhamad and his wife Sharon relocated to San Diego from Newark, New Jersey. A family man full of vision, great integrity and a natural born leader, Muhamad opened up a donut shop and an empowerment message t-shirt business on Market Street.
In March of 1993 his love for the Beauty/Barber industry lead him to open IsIs Beauty and Barber Salon on Euclid Avenue, and in the same year a second location on Imperial Ave. Both of these locations were located in areas of town where he felt he could provide quality service to those within the community.
By 1994 Muhamad found that his family was complete with four sons, but his genuine love spread beyond his immediate family, causing him to take on the role of Godfather to many. Muhamad is seen as an inspiration and mentor to many, young and old.
In the mid 90’s Muhamad created the IsIs Kids Foundation and hosted the SD Finest vs. SD Flavor Basketball Tournament, as well as coached Pop Warner Football. In addition, he also served as a supporter of Black Men United, an advocacy organization within Southeast San Diego. This involvement lead Muhamad to create the Muslim Business Association Award Ceremony.
Carl has had many visions of ways to serve the community by creating businesses that were needed within the Black community. In 2000, he opened up yet another business – the Salaam Fish House, now named Wings & Fish, which has experienced great success. In addition to the fish house, Muhamad continued growing the cosmetology side of his business by adding yet another IsIs Beauty Salon location, on Division Avenue in National City. Because of his entrepreneurial spirit, Muhamad has created many employment opportunities and second chances for youth and adults’ alike, teaching responsibility and the meaning of hard work.
Those that have seen Brother Carl out and about have usually seen him with his sons in tow. Through their tight knit relationship, he noticed that they were musically inclined, thus beginning another endeavor – managing their talents through IsIs Entertainment. This new venture showcases his Grammy nominated son, Rashad Muhamad’s hit beats that have been used by widely recognized musicians. His other son, Ahmad Muhamad is an extremely talented song writer who has appeared on several TV shows and has showcased his singing ability at several events within the San Diego and Los Angeles areas.
On July 19, 2015 Carl’s family and friends will host a fundraiser to assist with impending medical costs and everyday necessities for his family. We will be hosting a cut a thon along with selling food & drinks at Isis Barber Salon located at 1736 Euclid Ave from 11:30 am – until. Donations will also being accepted, in addition to a GoFund account that has been set up in his name at gofundme.com/yxv424 or you can contact his sister Michelle Horne-Harrell directly at 619-735-8559.
