This Saturday, June 14, San Diego will join over 1,500 cities nationwide in the “No Kings Day” protests – a mass mobilization against what organizers call the Trump administration’s authoritarian policies.
The local demonstration, organized by grassroots coalitions, will begin at 10 AM at Waterfront Park (1600 Pacific Highway) with a 1.25-mile march through downtown.
In San Diego, the central event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Waterfront Park, 1600 Pacific Highway. Here is a schedule shared by organizers:
- 9:00 am – noon: Family Friendly “Parents At the Playground”. Meet at the Waterfront Park Playground
- 10:00 am – 10:30 am: Brief program, with Allison Gill, political podcaster (Mueller She Wrote) and Navy veteran
- 10:30 am – noon: March down Harbor Drive. The march will be a 1.25 mile loop that begins and ends at Waterfront Park.
- 12:30 pm Celebrate Juneteenth with Kinfolk Fest, which will take place at the north end of Waterfront Park. There is an admission fee, and the event is 21 and over.
Local Concerns Spark Action
While the protest is national in scope, its roots in San Diego are personal. Community outrage has intensified following recent ICE raids, including a high-profile enforcement action in the South Park neighborhood. Protesters say these raids, paired with Trump’s expanded deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles, have sparked fear among immigrant communities.
“It’s not normal for the military to be employed out in the streets– those are for foreign wars, not arresting civilians on the streets,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass during a press conference held on June 12.
The No Kings movement has already drawn tens of thousands to past events, including the “Hands Off” rally in April. Saturday’s demonstrations are expected to build on that momentum.
Why This Matters for Black San Diego
- Militarized Police Responses – Following recent National Guard deployments in Los Angeles during ICE raids
- Federal Workforce Cuts – Trump’s executive orders eliminating thousands of government jobs
- Political Theater Over Progress – The $50 million military parade celebrating Trump’s 79th birthday
