San Diego nonprofit Our Genetic Legacy (OGL) made a splash on May 2nd at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA during their Community Swimathon & Pool Party.

The event wasn’t your typical pool party; its goal was to help the youth feel more confident in and out of the water and raise awareness around water safety.

Organizers emphasized that for OGL participants, learning to swim is just the beginning; it’s a gateway to lifelong opportunities. The program introduces students to pathways in scuba certification, underwater robotics, marine science, underwater archaeology, and even a summer educational expedition to Florida.

Community partners for the event included Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, Paddle for Peace, and Elementary Institute of Science. OGLyouth have also received swim coaching from Asante of Black Star Water Polo, scuba training from Chuck and Arwen of So Cal Black Scuba Divers and Snorkelers Association, and additional support from Coach Jackson of Coastal Defenders.
