The June 2, 2026 California Primary is just weeks away, but some decisions do not require months and weeks of study. This paper has covered City Council elections since San Diego allowed “real” versus perfunctory elections by District. We know a little bit about the people who have run for office and those who are running.

For this and countless reasons that voters of the Fourth City Council District can think of, the San Diego Voice & Viewpoint Newspaper is endorsing Martha Abraham for the Fourth District City Council seat.

We believe that the people of the Fourth District should be represented by those who have a real interest in their quality of life and needs; a person who is not afraid of being available and accessible and a person who is able to make decisions based upon the needs of their constituents.

Ms. Abraham is not running on how many generations her family has lived in the Fourth District. In her own words:

“I am a registered nurse, immigrant, mom, and a District 4 resident who has spent my entire career caring for our community’s most vulnerable members. For years I have worked on the front lines of our healthcare system….I learned early that you cannot heal a patient by only treating symptoms. It’s vital that you address underlying conditions. The same is true of our neighborhoods.

“I am running for City Council because the health crisis in District 4 is not a medical failure, it’s a policy failure and ineffective leadership, and I hope to fix it.”

The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint newspaper has always taken the business of endorsements seriously. We do so because so many of you, our readers, have repeatedly asked for our opinion over the years on the election of people running for office. Ms. Abraham’s involvement in the healthcare industry and her participation in the Footnote 7 Encanto property battle is but one example of seeking to protect the community in which she lives and calls home. One need only ask, where was the Incumbent when the Footnote 7 issue was in the making and not after everyone got on board. We believe that Ms. Abraham’s commitment will be to the people of the Fourth District and not the political interests that are seeking to return the incumbent to another term.
