Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Joe was born on January 22, 1939. He moved to San Diego as a young man in 1962 to build his life. In 1964, he began his career at the San Diego Union-Tribune as a dispatcher-clerk. Over the years, he advanced into sales, managing accounts that included Goodyear, Jeromeโs, the San Diego Opera, and The Old Globe, among many others. He was widely recognized for his work, receiving numerous awards and commendations throughout his career. After a distinguished career of more than 35 plus years of service with the San Diego Union-Tribune, he retired as an advertising executive.
While building his career, Joe also pursued his educational goals. In 1972, he earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Social Science from San Diego Evening College, and in 1987, he graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology.
Beyond his professional and academic accomplishments, Joe was a man of quiet passions. He was an avid reader who surrounded himself with books. A lifelong animal lover, his home was always filled with the companionship of a beloved dog or cat. He had a deep appreciation for all forms of art, including painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and literature. His love of creativity enriched his life. He also loved to travel, making several trips to England over the years.
Joe was also very involved with his community. He served on the Board of Directors of the College Area Community Council and as a member of the College View Estates Association for many years. Because of his hard work and dedication to the neighborhood, the City of San Diego honored him with special commendations in 1996 and 2008.
He was a longtime and devoted member of St. Paulโs Episcopal Cathedral, where he generously shared his time and talents with his church family serving on various committees, teaching Sunday School, and singing faithfully in the Cathedral Choir.
Joe passed on May 23, 2026.His memory lives on in the hearts of the many friends, neighbors, fellow parishioners, and former colleagues who shared in his journey.
A memorial service celebrating Joeโs life and faith will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, 11:00 a.m. at St. Paulโs Episcopal Cathedral, located at 2728 Sixth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103. A reception will follow the service.
