This week Southeastern San Diegans stopped traveling out of their community to seek urgent care.
Their first urgent care facility went operational Monday, serving patients on a walk-in basis from Monday through Friday 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the first floor of Joe & Vi Jacobs Center. Patients do not need to schedule appointments before accessing the facility.
The facility comprises six treatment beds with seven clinical staff including two registered nurses and three medical assistants helping register and discharge patients, and providing triage, diagnostic testing, treatment and patient education.
There are also emergency medicine providers and nurse practitioners who diagnose and care for many kinds of minor illnesses and injuries. Cardiac screening, on-site X-ray and lab testing are some of the services the unit provides.
โSESDUC [the acronym for the Southeastern San Diego Urgent Care] is staffed by experienced healthcare providers specializing in acute Emergency care medicine,โ representatives of the organization said in a release shared with Voice & Viewpoint on October 7.
Run by San Ysidro Health, the facility opened two years after Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, which previously owned the Joe & Vi Jacobs building, announced it would sell it to the community nonprofit to open a new health hub. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 23.
San Ysidro Health also plans to open its first Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) in the building in Spring 2027, aiming to serve more than 500 Southeastern seniors. Southeast San Diego seniors typically go to the San Diego PACE Chula Vista center or the San Diego PACE San Ysidro center for day-center and specialized PACE services
