Lisane Basquiat, co-administrator of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat and owner of Hera Hub Carlsbad and Shaping Freedom®, walked the runway Friday, September 12th for Actively Black‘s New York Fashion Week event “This Is Not a Fashion Show” at Sony Hall in New York.

Joined by her children, Raymond Joseph Basquiat and Jessica Kelly Basquiat, the family modeled clothing from a new Actively Black collaboration with the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat. (watch) Lisane’s granddaughter, Miss Emma, 8, also walked in the show as a part of a segment honoring Ruby Bridges, who in 1960 became the first child to integrate an all white school in the south. Emma re-enacted Ruby’s first day at William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana, where she was met with insults and racial slurs. (watch

Lisane is overwhelmed with gratitude. “The ‘This Is Not a Fashion Show’ event was amazing. This was so much more than a fashion show. It was a true celebration of our legacy,” says Lisane. “I commend Actively Black co-founders Lanny Smith and Bianca Winslow for honoring our heroes, like my brother Jean-Michel, Ruby Bridges, Cecil Williams, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and so many others, which was truly beautiful. And the excitement from the audience was wonderful. All of the new designs are amazing, and the show production and visuals were spectacular. I’m so happy that my family was a part.”

In February, Lisane interviewed Lanny on her Shaping Freedom podcast. Watch the interview, 5 Rules for Building Black Wealth with Lanny Smith, HERE.
