The 14th Amendment was ratified on this day in 1868. This guarantees birthright citizenship, prohibits states from depriving any person of due process, and mandates equal protection of the laws, ensuring that fundamental civil rights apply to all Americans equally. This amendment extended the rights and liberties granted by the Bill of Rights to formerly enslaved people shortly after they were granted freedom. 

1936 – June Jordan is Born 

June Jordan

Poet, educator, and activist June Jordan was born on July 9, 1936 Harlem, New York. Jordan’s work, an exploration of race, gender and social justice, had her often referred to as the “Poet of the People.” In her lifetime she published over 25 collections of poetry, essays, plays and children’s books. She passed away in 2002.
