1963 – Stay Out for Freedom Day

On this day in 1963, over 3,000 Black students skipped school in protest of de facto segregation in Massachusetts schools. After the Boston School Committee failed to address the unequal treatment in the city’s public schools, local civil rights leaders backed by the NAACP took matters into their own hands. That day, thousands of students arrived at churches and local community centers to attend “Freedom Schools” where they studied African American history, the civil rights movement, and non-violent resistance.
1889 – William H. Richardson Receives Baby Buggy Patent

On this day in 1889, William H. Richardson received his patent for his improvements to the baby carriage. Although the first baby carriage was invented in 1773, it was Richardson who created the reversible model we often see on strollers today. By placing a special joint in the bassinet, the operator of the stroller was now able to have the baby face them, rather than the opposite direction. Because of Richardson, strollers became more affordable and accessible for different families in the 1900s.
