On this day in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802, banning racial discrimination in defense industry jobs and federal employment. The order came after civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph threatened a large protest in Washington, D.C., to demand equal job opportunities for African Americans. The order created the Fair Employment Practices Committee to investigate discrimination complaints and helped open thousands of wartime jobs to Black workers. This resulted in the Great Migration of African Americans from the South to the North and West.
